Jimi Hendrix was born in Seattle, Washington, USA, on November, 27 1942. He was named Johnny Allen Hendrix at birth. Divorce of his parents and death of his mother in 1951 had a great influence on him. Jimi was very close with his grandmother, Norah Rose Moor, who cultivated in him pride for his American origin (Jimi’s great grandfather was half Irish and half Cherokee). First acoustic guitar was given to Jimi by his father, who had bought it for 5 dollars, and this instrument predetermined his son’s destiny. Soon Jimi played with several Seattle bands, but was sentenced two years of prison. Nevertheless his lawyer managed to change prison sentence to military service, and young musician found himself in 101st Airborne Division. In the army he was considered to be a careless soldier without any good qualities.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience had only been together for a few weeks before recording.
After the military service Jimi Hendrix and his friend Billy Cox moved to Nashville, and in early 60’s they already played on stage before B. B. King and Little Richard. By 1966 Jimi had his own band named Jimmy James and The Blue Flames. Also during that period he met Frank Zappa, who showed him a new guitar effect pedal wah-wah. Jimi liked the way it sounded so much that he became a master of that effect, and it is impossible to imagine his guitar sound without it. The next period of creative work began when Hendrix met Chas Chandler, former member of The Animals. He became Jimi’s producer and helped him to organize and start new band, named The Jimi Hendrix Experience. There were three members in the band: Jimi, drummer Mitch Mitchell and bassist Noel Redding. Then Hendrix moved to London.
The success came soon: after several songs released the band got numerous fans. The Jimi Hendrix Experience did not restrict to some certain style, they simply had no style limits: they wrote different songs: ballads - The Wind Cries Mary, experimental songs – Purple Haze. The latter was recorded with heavy and highly distorted guitar sound. The first album - Are You Experienced? - was released in 1967. Hendrix was innovator not only in music, but on stage too. He was the first guitarist who set his instrument on fire during the show. It happened on March, 31 1967, and after that gig Jimi was in hospital with his hands burned. New songs were created, and the second album Axis: Bold As love was released in December 1967. Jimi lost part of the record, and release was almost spoiled. But terms were fixed, and Hendrix and Chandler spent a night mixing the record by means of separately recorded parts. No surprise that after such a studio work Hendrix said that he was never satisfied by the result. Third album of The Jimi Hendrix Experience, named Electric Ladyland (1968) was way more experimental. There was a 15-minutes blues Voodoo Child and jazz song Rainy Day, Dream Away.
In June of 1969 bassist Noel Redding said about his decision to leave the band, but by the August Hendrix had a new band Gypsy Sun and Rainbows. They performed at legendary Woodstock Music & Art Fair. As many experts note that it was Jimi’s best show ever. Anyhow Gypsy Sun and Rainbows did not exist for a long time: in 1970 Hendrix created Band of Gypsys, all members of which were black-skinned. Jimi played with his old friend – bassist Billy Cox and drummer Buddy Miles. Last Jimi’s show took place in September, 6 1970, at Isle of Fehmarn festival.
Early on September 18, 1970, Jimi Hendrix died in London, in hotel Samarkand. The circumstances of his death were never cleared up. Musician of genius was only 27 years old, but he opened a new chapter in world rock music, and the electric guitar was given totally new sound. Posthumous discography of composer and virtuosic guitarist counts about 300 records.Studio AlbumsJimi Hendrix Are You Experienced Full Album Download FullValleys of NeptuneThe legendary Jimi Hendrix’s album Valleys Of Neptune, released many years after his death, will not change the musician’s particular niche in the world music history, yet certainly will be interesting to rock-music fans19Compilation albums7Lives12The Jimi Hendrix Experience
How do the mono and stereo mixes of this 1967 trip stack up against one another?Jimi Hendrix Experience Are You Experienced
Are You Experienced, the 1967 psychedelic classic by the Jimi Hendrix Experience, is an album we’ve all heard at least half of in our lifetime, whether you realize it or not. From the iconic sexiness of ”Foxy Lady” (Wayne’s World fans throw your hands up!) to the funkadelic cool of “Purple Haze”, Are You Experienced is arguably what cemented Jimi Hendrix as the legend you know him as today.
We’d be willing to bet that if you have heard this album from start to finish that it’s in its stereo form. Not too many people realize that this seminal psych freak-out album was released with a dedicated mono mix for just under a year when it was first released. Finding an original mono mix of this album is difficult (to say the least), so you can imagine how beyond stoked we were to score one just last month!
In this edition of “Mono vs. Stereo” we’ll be taking a look at the two mixes of this classic album to see how they rival one another in terms of overall experience. Does the fabled and incredibly rare mono mix offer us a totally new and revelatory version of an iconic album? Or is the tried-and-true stereo the beloved, ideal mix for a reason? Let’s get spinning and find out!
(Note: For the sake of this comparison, we’re looking at the original US release of Hendrix’s Are You Experienced? Tri-color Reprise issue from 1967.) The Hard-Panned Vocals in Stereo Work Surprisingly Well
In stereo, the vocals usually hard pan left, right, or center. This is just an inherent characteristic of stereo vocals from 1967, and if you can deal with it, it can be used to great effect. There could be reverb in one ear and a dry vocal in the other, or there could just be vocals on one side, and none on the other. It’s imbalanced, sometimes imperfect, but it’s what you know, and it just feels right. Take “Purple Haze” for instance: Jimi is hard right and his guitar is hard left. It feels as though it shouldn’t work, but this is one of those rare instances when it does. In mono, his voice is front and center, but the song doesn’t feel as urgent as the stereo. In Stereo, the Bass Kicks Major Ass
The bass in the mono version is mixed a bit higher, as per usual with recordings of this era. The stereo mix, however has bass in spades, which is an unusual but welcome progression. This was surprising to us since stereo technology was so new at the time Hendrix recorded the album. The kick drum is all but non-existent, but that’s to be expected for a rock album of the era.“The Wind Cries Mary”Sounds Better in Mono
There was one song that we preferred in mono, however. “The Wind Cries Mary” is a slower, more contemplative affair and there aren’t a lot of components to it. It’s a sparse song, which lends itself to the straightforward nature of mono. While the hard panning doesn’t offend throughout most of the album, it’s overly done here and we’re left wanting a fuller sound. Hats off, Mary– you win this roundNo Radical Differences or Alternate Takes Stand Out Between the Mixes
Surprisingly, the mono mix has no “AHA!” moments like Sgt. Pepper’s did. There are no parts in familiar songs that make you sit straight up in your chair and say “What was that? Did I hear that right?” The mono offers no fresh view of an album that’s been ingrained into your brain for 50+ years.
That being said, the stereo sounds fresher to these ears. It’s apparent the mono mix was intended for AM radio because it’s more compressed than the stereo. The mono is a rawer experience, but sounds like a band playing together in a room with overdub. The stereo, meanwhile, is, for a lack of a better term, an experience, with panning, echo, and a little vocal flange (that warbly, underwater effect). It spreads out in front of you like a full color painting. In comparison, the mono sounds squished, and reduced down from what it COULD be.
Think of the stereo mix like an HD TV, and the mono like an old color set from the 80’s. You can watch “Avatar” on both, but the experience truly pops when it’s not limited by a lesser technology. Are You Experienced In MonoIs a Drier, More Cohesive Band Effort
This mix was clearly compressed for AM airplay of the day. The bass is a bit higher in the mix, with Jimi’s voice more out front, with oftentimes unfutzed-with effects. The guitar is also a little drier, without effects. This cut comes off as more of a band effort. A straightforward guitar album, if you will. An intriguing listen if you’ve only ever heard the stereo, but to us, not the superior mix.Are You Experienced in Stereo Uses the Technology of the Day to Its Fullest PotentialJimi Hendrix Are You Experienced Full Album Download Mp3
Much like the name of the band implies, the stereo cut is a true experience. At times the mix can be a little wonky, especially with headphones, but the good outweighs the bad. There’s more air around the instruments, and the songs feel bigger than the mono mix. The echo, flange, and panning are used to great effect throughout. They got this one right; it rocks without compromise.THE VERDICT
Much like The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, most people have never heard the mono mix of this incredibly important album. Unlike Sgt. Pepper’s, however, the stereo version is the keeper. There are no true revelations buried within the mono mix, no alternate takes, no true hidden gems. Stereo serves the spirit of this album, and it feels like a veil has been lifted compared to the mono.
We hesitate to use the term “better” when comparing experiences, since it’s such a subjective opinion, but we truly prefer the stereo mix of Are You Experienced. It’s so much more open and decongested. While by no means an audiophile recording, there’s much more air around the instruments and the songs have a spaciousness that’s so much better served by the stereo mix. What do you think?
